Yesterday I was hurting. I was tired and my legs ached. In my room I sat in bed and tried to recover. For the first time here I watched some TV on my phone. Using the 100GB on my phone plan will be nearly impossible no matter how much I watch, but that's not why I'm here and it was just because I was exhausted.
The evening before I had talked to Winhard about getting a decent meal in Carrion and from my balcony I saw him in the Plaza. I went down and we agreed to meet later for dinner. Unfortunately, it was Sunday and the choices were limited
I went back to my room and watched another episode of John Oliver.
I was concerned about the next 3 days. It was around 95km to Leon and last night I was doubting my ability to do that. Winhard suggested getting a train in Sahagun 10km into the second day. That would move me up a day for a rest day later and give me a very short 10km day. During dinner it started to rain lightly and a look at the forecast showed rain all day. More motivation to cheat.
I was in bed early and planned a 6am start to get a long, boring 18km stretch out of the way. When my alarm went off I heard rain and slept another 30 minutes. When I started walking about 6:45 it was a light drizzle. It got a little heavier and a little lighter until it got light enough to see. At that point it mostly stopped.
In the light this section lived up to its reputation. There were very long distances between the few pilgrims I could occasionally see. Everything hurt. There was no place to rest and everything was wet. For the first time walking I took out my earbuds and put on some music. Thanks to Maria McKee and Sarah McLachlan releasing my inner 90's girl I powered through the rest of the day.
Not a great picture day. Rainy and overcast, wet fingers and dull scenery. Sorry.
I felt pretty strong and considered continuing on to Sahagun like Tom and some others that were eating in Moratinos. It would have made the next two days easier. I, probably wisely, decided against it. The logistics of getting to Leon is tricky due to the distances between towns. Pretty much no matter how you slice it there is one nearly 40km day. If I need a day off I can take a train into Leon from tomorrow's stop or possibly take a taxi the final 10km into Leon if that day is too big.
The place I booked tonight is an odd place. I came to the door and it was open but nobody was around. I saw a number on the wall and called it and a guy came running over from a block or two away. It has 4 or 5 bedrooms and a common bathroom but it's clean and you get to use the washing machine for free. Soap and all. That's a big bonus. Dinner is a 7 at his restaurant a block away which is special for me because it's closed on Mondays. I hope it's good. There is also some breakfast stuff he told me to help myself to in the morning.
Dinner is just for me. On the way over blue skies to the west and thunder and lightening to the east.
The menu del dia at Bodega El Castillo was 13€. In Moratinos this is the best meal. They have a very nice dining room.
