Day 13 - Burgos to Hontanas

Last night I headed out to find some food in Burgos.  Wandering around there were very few open kitchens at 7:30.  I ran into a German group containing Hans and Valerie from last night and Thomas from Stuttgart.  They invited me to join them but we could not find a place with an open kitchen.  They decided a pintxos place was good enough but I wanted a real meal and switched to the Eddie and Zeanna team that happened to be in front of the place the German crew chose.  The place across the street started serving at 8 and we waited 15 minutes for the dinning room to open.

The 16€ menu del dia was excellent.  I had bean and sausage stew, roast lamb and flan.  Wine and bread, of course.  If you are ever in Burgos I can recommend Los Herreros.  Renae and Tom from Jersey joined us and I learned about profit.

When we came out of dinner the full Irish crew were in the street and I wisely went home.  I'm sure there were a few slow walkers this morning.

I was out the door just after 7 and after just a few blocks I came upon Ed, Stefan and Doug having coffee and I thought a little something would be smart.  I headed out of town but the markers were hard to find and I was following the Camino Ninja app map.  The route was harder than normal to follow.  I picked up some signs as the city began to thin and I came across Stefan.  We walked together for nearly half the day.  He stopped at the town around the 22km mark.  I had coffee, coke and a sandwich there.

The rest of the day I walked alone and it seemed like there were not many people and I recognized no one.  I think most of these people spent an extra day in Burgos.  I briefly chatted with Hirm from the Netherlands.

When I finally got to my room after a long 32km as I was getting into the shower I checked my email to find the KLM casually cancelled my flight and booked me on a return 2 days earlier.  I called AmEx and was glad I booked through them as they booked me something else on the original date.  Unfortunately, I was on hold waiting for confirmation so long my international minutes ran out and I got disconnected.  Still unresolved.

At the Hostal I knew Tom from England and I met Domingo from Italy/Spain, he is cycling.  Dinner for 12€ was some good lentil soup with sausage, a paella that was tasty but a little light on the meat and a packaged ice cream cone.

After dinner Domingo and I walked through the small town and stopped for a beer in another albergue/bar.  In the dining room I spotted the Japanese father/son pair I have seen since day one.  Overall, it seems not many from my group are here.  New beginnings maybe.
